No Such Thing As Art

It is important to understand a word.  Do we understand the word art?  Or artist?  As an artist, you begin to learn that ultimately you will be responsible to create and define your unique artistic practice, and so you begin chasing your tail.  Tailspinning is a good description for artmaking, as is: tumbling, turning, running, looking, discovering, seeking, making, breaking and ultimately—creating (or cracking).

Creating is a word that can be coasted on as an artist, for a while… until you run into the question of, is what I’m creating art? Is a painting art?  Is any type of painting art, made by any person, or machine?  Is a sculpture art?  What makes a sculpture a sculpture?  Can a garden hose be a sculpture, can a pillow be a sculpture?  Can walking be a performance, can talking be an art experience?  Can a word be art? Can anything be art?  If yes, why?  If no, why?

Then the questions. What does art do?  What is it supposed to do? What is it not supposed to do? Should art be purposeful?  Can it not be purposeful?  Should art inspire, delight, make new knowledge?  If yes, then why not call it education?

There is a word that I love, haecciety, which means the discrete qualities, properties or characteristics of a thing that make it a particular thing.  What is the haecciety of art?  In my own quest to understand my pursuit of art making, I first think it is better said, my art being. I arrived to understand art as everything, in the footsteps of artists like Beuys, Kaprow and theorists like Dewey, but now understand there is actually no such thing as art.  Yes, I believe I am an artist even though I do not believe in art.

How can I be an artist, if there is no such thing as art?  Perhaps, there is art after all—but it is invisible.  Art could be recognized simply as the free impulse to create. Then, perhaps, what we do and make could be considered artful, full of art.  However, I think there are other words applied to what we imagine as artful, such as heart-full (holding the art in the heart) or careful (full of care, and separated out to be are-full) which might be better descriptors of the types of creation we could consider as art.  Is what we create done with heart, or with care?  I would argue that something could be made without those qualities and could be seen or experienced by the artist with heart and care, and then could be re-imagined and reconstructed as art, because of the participants artful lens.

I currently recognize in my own practice definite patterns, actions, and collections that create my body of work, and they include: relics of processes of thought and experiences, educational aids and ideas, re-purposed materials, functional and decorative objects, participatory learning experiences, chance, ritual and devised collaborative improvisation.  I could also say I recognize living as my art practice.  I recognize my studio to include: my bedroom, the kitchen, the woods, the city, my neighbor’s house, the classroom, and (my favorite) the wide barren landscapes of Iceland.

Why then be an artist, versus a sociologist, educator, explorer, activist, writer, cook, gardener and mother?  Because as an artist I am always all of these and all of what I want to be, do, say, and make.  Being an artist is the invitation to live my fullest potential, unrestricted by titles and disciplines.

As I become more aware of my joy, I recognize my path as an artist will continue to be in pursuit of beauty, truth and interconnection.  Sometimes that will be found in the form of gathering acorns to make place based color, writing poetry, making sauerkraut, creating curriculum, researching, having community conversations, knitting a scarf, developing organizations, taking walks, or collaborating on interactive multi-media methods to translate color to sound.

Knowing that I am an artist creating artfully, the question is less important what am I making, but why am I making or doing it, and is the way I am engaging aligned with my values.  The questions we need to ask ourselves as artists are less about the formal qualities of what we do but rather we should ask, what are my values and principles, and how am I living and creating with integrity?

Materials: Their story

(these are new paintings on handmade watercolor paper, using lilacs, dirt, acrylic paint)
I have been noticing a shift of process or conscious perception in the approach to my work lately.  We grow at such slow speeds that often we don't even get the chance to see it, but I am aware of a difference in how I see and my relationship to chosen materials.

Right now I am very interested in the story, essence, or spirit of the materials used in creating something.  I am  interested in the space between the paper and the paint, the way the light moves it, the information it suggests.  I feel that the paper is deserving of its "importance" its not simply a convenient background for a picture, but rather in itself a precious object, created from living matter in a particular way, coming to its own resting place and all of this is of value and consideration to the viewing experience...its as if everything has at least 3 meanings, as certain phrases do...they are poems with many subtle whispers.  I also feel that I am almost seeing two dimensional things as three dimensional with another dimension of meaning...layers and layers.....

And lastly, I am curious about working within a boundary of 3, (until I don't want to do that anymore!) meaning to consider 3 elements-3 choices....

Working on it, art in progress 12/7/12

I am happily working on a bunch of new work in the studio...after getting my hands wet and making acquaintances with my fear and self-criticism.  I realized that all I have to do is keep doing.  The fear just wanted me to "STOP BE SAFE!!!" after one new work.  I didn't follow the instructions and instead showed up the next day and started another one and now after working on more pieces, what felt like a crazy loner piece now has become the beginning of a new body of exciting work that I courageously stand behind and will continue to open up to.  Sounds simple.

Artfull-ness and vulnerability

Beginning of an installation/performance/interactive art project "1 in a 100 million-gazillion"
And so I begin somewhere over and over again...how many beginnings there are.  Both of these (Excuse my not so great pictures, my camera is broken!) pieces are beginning to become something, a part of the whole unmet and unseen picture...

These last months have been all about creating my classes and workshops and my energy and creative process has been fully devoted to their successful development.  I am truly proud to say that they are very successful!

Starting last week I noticed that I no longer felt anxious and I also feel enough emotional space and energy to approach my own personal art, and so I begin again.  I know it may be cliche sounding at this point but I am continually shocked by the magnitude of fear and doubt that I am met with when I begin my work.  I really hear myself saying "You really are not an artist"  "What is this shit you are making" "You don't even know what your making because it's nothing and total nonsense to be sitting here hitting clay for hours when you could be doing something else helpful"....there is more where that comes from...after two days of long studio hours and no "good" quantifiable results I did not want to go back yesterday.  So I didn't, instead I played hookie with a friend and was very aware of my resistance.  I, probably like you, don't want to look stupid and make unlikable work and so I naturally don't want to face those chances and by being away from the studio and not creating I am much safer and less whole.  The costs end up being high either way...risk the pain of being inauthentic and denying my creative impulses or risk not being understood, unliked, etc.

I am going to embrace vulnerability like a life vest and jump in.  Begin again and again and again.....and so I expose to you my guts and somehow this helps me.  Somehow telling on myself feels like medicine.  Somehow I will go to the studio tomorrow and I will begin again.

One last side note.  I love my job as a teacher and facilitator of creativity.  I LOVE IT  and I LOVE ALL OF MY STUDENTS.  I LOVE IT SO BAD!!!!!!!  and I LOVE YOU SO BAD!!!!  Thank you and good night.

In Process....Light as Breeze

It has been a month since my last post-wowzers!  It has been a month full of art making, art teaching and art events.  I think that is another way of saying its been a wonderful month.

One of my Creativity classes in process

I enjoyed an amazing couple of days printing at the Womens Workshop Studio in Rosendale NY.  Me and my friend and fellow artist Lindsey Brown rented the space for 2 days and printed our hearts out.  I literally was printing my heart out...and now I am in the studio working with those heart prints.  I also stumbled in to a delightful gallery in Rosendale, Roos gallery,  a contemporary art treasure box!  I will be participating in their super fun holiday show of small works.  Can't wait!
Prints in process

Corrado in Process
Mid month we had artist friends visiting from Sicily.  Corrado Iozzia came especially to work in the studio here for a self created intensive residency.  After two weeks of solid work we held a beautiful artist reception in my new studio.  Corrado and his work where wonderfully received in NY and we are looking forward to the next visit.

Last week my painting 'Unearthing to be Enough' was hung at the Woodstock Art Museum as part of the Under 40 show curated by Greg Slick.  I was so pleased to be accepted in to this juried show as I had seen a show curated by Greg Slick at the Dorsky Museum that I just loved.  It feels great to be working with other artists and curators whom you admire.

A highlight among many was discovering the unexpected article 'Light as Breeze' written by Paul Smart for the Woodstock Times last week!  Oh my gosh, I am so flattered!  I love how he wrote so candidly of me and my practice.  There is a long quote from this blog, jeez keeping me on my toes now that I see how "public" my blog is!  I actually don't have many words to describe my joy?  I think the best word is GRATITUDE.

Alas, the coming months seem to be plumping up with activity.  I have quite a few studio visits scheduled, I'm working on curating a show, more Creativity & Courage Workshops.....we shall see....

New Autumn Creativity Workshop Series

Following my wonderful teaching experiences this Summer I've decided to offer a new series of four workshops.  Below is a brief description, to read more and sign up for my new newsletter.click here
As of right now I have 4 available spaces and will be overjoyed for you to fill them!

Creativity & Courage

The Origin of Becoming.

New: Autumn Workshop Series
Creativity & Courage to See September 22
Creativity & Courage to Listen October 20
Creativity & Courage to Be Whole November 17
Creativity & Courage to Love December 15
Each workshop will meet one Saturday a month from 2-5pm.  Weather permitting the first two workshops will be outdoors in beautiful Germantown, NY. The cost for the workshop series is $200 including all materials.  For questions and to register, email dawnbreezepaintings@gmail.com or call #917-622-5141.

Through exposure to a variety of artists, play and hands-on imaginative exercises, you will deepen your ability to express thoughts and feelings. Through your innate creativity you will discover new ways to problem solve, communicate and connect with both yourself and others.

This series is for each of you that want to explore your unique creativity in a supported and mindful environment, to be challenged to experience and examine your relationship to your existing thoughts and perceptions, and allow new ideas to emerge in surprisingly delightful ways!

Previous workshops students have said:
"I learned that I flourish in spaces of time devoted purely to creativity."-Nicole Smith Vidor, Life Coach

"This is a wonderful workshop, there were many ways to access our own knowing.  I left feeling stronger and internally balanced."-Alison Fox, Artist, Educator.

"By taking time out of routine thinking and actions and by giving myself the time and space for creative exploration, I became present for deep insights to emerge that perhaps were always present, but not overheard above the more habitual thoughts."-Gianni Iacono, Chef

"I was reminded of many things. It is really important to take time to smell the roses. If I don't take care of myself it is impossible to take care of others. I have learned this but must be reminded often. life is so busy and we don't seem to find enough time to nourish ourselves. this was a great opportunity to do just that."-Dana Eudy, Herbalist, Farmer

Leading a creative path..

Two weeks ago I lay here, up on the mountain under the apple tree, I painted and wrote in preparation for my first plein air creativity workshop....

Under the apple tree I saw that in order to "teach" creativity I will always need to be actively creative, which means I will always need to be constantly engaged in my fear, in vulnerability and imperfection. Curiosity and Courage lead me forever onwards. (That is my prayer)
 My students beautiful work....

My first plein air creativity group participating in the workshop titled "The courage to be".  It was truly beyond anything I could have imagined or hoped for-rippling deeply for us all.

Me taking a day to rejuvenate in between...and then the amazing germantown artist studio tour I organized!!!!
