Easy Does It

The harder it is, the easier I must make it.
I am beginning again with simple daily actions.  A daily drawing.
  Noticing (and noting)
what I see.

Three Days of Drawing

These are three drawings done in the past three days...all are 20" x 20", mixed medium on paper. They are just practice, playing...getting some insides out. Its happy and hard to be home after 2.5 months, I want to jump into my art, but am also terrified to start. So, these little daily pieces seem to be a friendly warm up excersize.

Flowers This Morning

Flowers This Morning
14" x 17"

I love love these flowers!!! Today I was reminded of the exercise I did earlier this spring, repeating tomato's, its so good for me to practice looking at the same living thing with fresh eyes, you always see more, and feel differently each day.

Flowers

Flowers
11" x 17"
Mixed Medium on Paper

I have completely fallen in love with these flowers, I went to the farm market yesterday, and couldn't leave without wrapping my arms around these beauties, it was love at first site! I honestly couldn't wait to wake up this morning to see these gorgeous things again! I think I will try doing a little sketch/painting of these for the next couple days, I am so enraptured, and captivated! Love, love love!

Summertime

So, I'm hear on Martha's Vineyard, literally working/cooking everyday! I would like to paint, and beach it...but every day my hands are busy making sauces.
The best part of being hear, is being in a big communal family summer home, that feels like camp. Everyone moving in and out, sleeping across form my best friend, it's like our highschool dorm, when we first became friends.
These two sketches are my sister Summer, with a highlight cap on her head..we just pulled skinny pieces of hair through to be summer "frosted", and the second sketch is my BFF Mary, sitting on her bed this morning.

Crack In The Wall

Crack In The Wall
15" x 22"
Mixed Medium on Paper

Another illustration of an idea....these past two daily paintings/drawings are different for sure. ( Personally they remind me a little of highschool, which is ok since that just signifies an exploring mind) I like this freedom to explore ideas right now. Also, its really true that just by actively drawing/painting one idea develops the next, even when it doesn't always appear that way. Its interesting to watch.

Out my window

Out my window
15" x 22"
Mixed Medium on Paper

"Out my window I see nature, god, beauty...but I'm thinking about extinction"

This is an illustration of a visual thought that I've had in my head for a week and half. I keep looking out windows, and in my minds eye I see dinosaurs running by...part hilarious and partially a delicate tragedy, that feels ominous.

This was fun to do a daily painting again, especially just to illustrate a thought, and using some older techniques.

Pretty Thoughts

Pretty Thoughts
28" x 36"
Mixed Medium on Paper

I like this pose, and the models tend to do it, sleepy daydreamed-blissful thoughts. I like the pose because even though the model can be somewhat recognized, with the eyes closed there's a level of anonynamity which can engage anyone viewing the portrait...its not too personal it's just human. Like my spelling errors..human.

Hot Feet

This is a funny drawing, different pieces of flesh piled on to a form...I felt like a child drawing this, moving around drawing what parts interested me, I liked that big mole on the leg!

Opening up!

This drawing was also from this past weeks life drawing class. It's wildly marked and she looks like she's bursting open with wings. I have to say I am very grateful to my dear friend Gretchen who is an incredible figure painter who is next to me in class, first of all I owe a great deal of the "opening up" of my actual life drawings to her. A couple weeks ago, when I just got so fed up with trying to draw the "right way" I began drawing what felt good, which looked very wild, loose and messy to me...and Gretchen looked over and said "Dawn, that's really good!" It was the encouragement I needed to take another look ,myself, and almost agree with her.
During this drawing I was scribbling wildly, and dancing all over the page, making a HUGE mess, and Gretchen looked over again, and said " oh, Dawn I love that!"
Cheers to our friends and their appreciation of our work, and our authentic selves. They help us shake off our self -
consciousness, and open up to our true selves! I am forever grateful to all of you, you all are helping me become the artist I am!

PS. Check Gretchens Daily Painting Blog, you should see her gorgeous nudes! www.gretchenkellyart.blogspot.com

Little Sister

These are two portraits of I did this weekend, I visited my family, and begged my Mom and Sister to let me draw them. I really feel so excited right now by this new mentality I've adopted towards my "drawing"...which is doing what FEELS good, and its physical, not just cerebral.
