Switch Factory Studio announces Your Spirit Don't Leave Knowing, a group show of work from Clare Grill, Dawn Breeze, Diana Chamberlain, Elisa Lendvay, Kezia Hearn and Lucy Mink. In this converted factory space overlooking the Bantam River, Switch Factory Studio is the project of artist and blogger Jessica Jane Perkel. In the past year this unique venue has been the site of several unusual shows of contemporary artwork from regional artists.

The artists in Your Spirit Don't Leave Knowing, all women, have developed working methods based on repetition and pattern, resulting in work at once personal and mystical. Painter Clare Grill works the surfaces of her canvases into faded impressions and zoomed-in details of relics from the past, taking as their source material old photos and nineteenth century embroidery samplers. Dawn Breeze appropriates the clothes of her deceased sister - tearing them, weaving them, painting and gilding them, her process an exercise in transcendence. Lucy Mink’s diaristic painting practice results in captivating compositions of folded, colorful spaces at once tiny and vast. Elisa Lenvay’s paper-clay “wall pockets” and pierced paper fans are totemic and dreamlike, as are the intricate Rorschach blots and ceramic wall assemblages of Kezia Hearn. Diana Chamberlain’s porcelain wall hangings result from a process of working the clay like a skin, finding forms like the accumulations and detritus found in nature.

The work in this show, hung as a group, leaves an imprint of the deep psychological space that many artists work from to create objects and paintings. This is a risky endeavor, but one that enriches all our lives by pointing to the universality of our most intimate experiences.

The opening reception will be this Saturday, from 5 - 8 pm, with an after party from 9pm -1am. Parking can be found in the lots across the street. Gallery hours are Fridays, 11-5pm, by chance or by appointment, please call 860 201 7767.
